Preparation of Transparent MgAl2O4 Spinel by Pulsed Electric Current Sintering Using Two-step Heating Method

Transparent MgAl2O4 ceramics were fabricated by pulsed electric current sintering (PECS) employing two-step mode. First, nanoscale powders produced solution combustion synthesis from hydrated nitrate compounds and urea. Subsequently, the synthesized sintered PECS with a heating rate of 100oC/min under an applied pressure 100 MPa. The process was conducted according to profile. At first step, temperature increased 1050, 1100, 1150oC, followed dwell time 60 min. second-step carried out at 1300, 1350, 1400oC for 20 transparent 1050oC/ min – 1400oC/ exhibited transmittance over 80% in infrared range. Transparent polycrystalline spinel ceramic was fabricated without any sintering aids by spark plasma sintering method of a mixture of Al2O3 and MgO powders for only 10min soak at 1250°C. Densification, microstructure and optical transparency of spinel were examined. The spinel exhibits an in-line transmission of 55% for a visible-wavelength of 470nm and high hardness value of 2040 HV.
